I currently work as a reporter at The Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis, Tennessee. I cover economic development and healthcare and previously covered soccer and the Memphis suburbs.

Journalism Experience:

Community Watchdog Reporter, The Desert Sun     June 2016—November 2018

I worked as a community watchdog reporter for The Desert Sun newspaper in Palm Springs, California. My beat covered the cities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs. I wrote and produced video content on local government, municipal elections, community and economic development, business, medical and recreational marijuana and other community issues. I also produce data-based investigative pieces and long-form feature stories.

Content and Social Media Editor, Skynet Solutions   September 2015—June 2016

As Content and Social Media Editor at Skynet Solutions, I managed 30 social media accounts and eight blogs for seven clients and Skynet Solutions corporate. I wrote original content for all blogs and social media posts, as well as client websites, and scheduled posts at strategic times to get optimal traffic. I project managed special corporate and client promotions for the Skynet Solutions marketing department. My duties also included uploading blogs onto client websites and fixing minor HTML or CMS errors that affected blog display on the websites.

Intern at McClatchy DC Bureau                                       May—August 2015

I was selected as a full-time intern at the Washington, D.C. bureau of the McClatchy Company, which publishes 29 daily newspapers around the United States. I wrote and shot video for breaking news and feature stories from Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court and the Pentagon. Topics covered included Supreme Court rulings on the Affordable Care Act and same-sex marriage, the Hillary Clinton email scandal, issues faced by transgender service members and veterans and the Obama administration’s policy against the Islamic State group.

Freelance Journalist                                   Intermittently from August 2011 to May 2015

As a freelancer, I wrote a variety of articles for blogs and magazines including non-narrative features, film festival coverage, personal essays and personal finance blogs. These pieces appeared in Vox magazine, Zpatky magazine and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ website. During this time I also maintained a personal news blog on my WordPress site.

Intern at Pittsburgh Tribune-Review                            May—August 2014

I was selected as a full-time intern at a daily newspaper covering Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. I wrote articles for the Trib and associated weekly newspapers, ranging from breaking news, crime and politics to healthcare and Butler County, Pennsylvania news. I produced content that appeared on A1 and wrote long-form and investigative stories.

Intern at New Europe                                                    January—April 2014

I interned for a weekly, pan-European newspaper based in Brussels. I covered breaking news, as well as politics and policy-related stories about the European Union, EU economic news and feature stories.

I reported at a daily newspaper in mid-Missouri pitching and writing articles for the crime and courts and public life beats, as well as creating and editing multimedia projects. I produced multiple A1 articles and long-form feature stories.
