Journalists and Twitter

I’ve been noticing more and more lately how different journalists I follow utilize Twitter. One of the reporters who I think has a great Twitter presence is David Kirkpatrick, Cairo Bureau Chief for The New York Times. One of the things that impresses me most is how responsive he is to tweets from his followers. He seems to respond to almost everyone who tweets at him or tweets links to his work (myself included). With over 13,000 followers, that’s really impressive. He’s also really good about tweeting links to all his articles, as well as stories from other journalists or other media outlets that he thinks are worth a read.

As I think about his Twitter presence, I think about my own, too. With many fewer followers I suppose it isn’t as crucial for me to be as Twitter savvy as Kirkpatrick, but it couldn’t hurt. One of the reasons I read so much of his work and came to respect him as a journalist was because of his Twitter account.
